Adventurous and romantic--this history
of pirates includes a high seas
adventure and the biographies of several

a computer makes possible. A pre-reading

contain only foods known in that area at
the time.

At Home in the Heartland
A source on immigrants and others in
Chicago, it gives brief biographies and
outlines choices individuals had to
make, an intersection of personal goals
and the times in which they lived--the
Depression, the aftermath of W.W.II,
etc. The stories were apparently
gathered from their descendents, so you
get to make the same choices, and
compare to the ones made by the real
people. Somewhat slow, but visually
rich. The personal interwoven with the
historical makes it worthwhile.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Only the quiz is interactive, but still
an interesting and important site.
"Cave Painting"

rocks, in the style of cave paintings.
See a real cave filled with

on my side.)
How Far Is It?
Give the computer the names of two
cities, and it will calculate miles, and
show you both cities on a world map
(your choice of projections)
For a FREE program that prints maps from
one page to almost six feet across on a
PC printer check out
Mega Maps.
Cyber Tiger
National Geographic
"Build a digital habitat for a Siberian
tiger" (in a zoo)
Life Over Time
Interactive games about evolution and
natural history, plus animations.
NOT FOR INTERNET EXPLORER 3
Submarine Mountains
Using a model of underwater mountains,
students make a representation of the
mountains the way they would be seen by
sonar.
What Came First?
A highly visual activity for
understanding the sequence of evolution.
Model of Sea-Floor
Spreading
Use the part entitled "A Model of
Sea-Floor Spreading" about half way down
the page.
Lots of fascinating material on
important subjects; however, the teacher
(or parent) will have to figure it out
some before presenting it to the
student. The first part of the lesson
unfortunately uses commercial material
not readily available, but the second
part gives a good model of vital
information.
Tracking Global Climate
Change: Microfossil Record of the
Planetary Heat Pump
Some excellent information and
activities to illustrate how the
planetary heat pump works.
Unfortunately, to do any hands-on with
the foraminifera you need both
foraminifera and a binocular microscope,
not readily available. But the first
part of the site really explains the
distribution of the sun’s energy on the
earth and some of its effects.
Interpreting
Paleoenvironments with Microfossils
The more complicated parts of this
lesson are simply too technical, even
for most high school students. It does,
however, give some more information on
how students may be able to collect
foraminifera (protozoans about the size
of a grain of sand) fossils.

Social
studies
Dino-Facts A Unit on
Dinosaur Behavior
Good information about dinosaur fossils,
and how scientists interpret fossils to
theorize about their meaning.
Correlation and Strata
Students use index fossils to trace
specific strata that occur in both
France and Montana. Students learn that
certain creatures which became fossils
existed only at specific times, and in a
certain order. Only in a few of these is
there a chance of finding fossils.
Findasaurus
Not really interactive, but a fun list
of (real and imaginary) dinosaur names
The Fruity Pharaoh
if your kids (or you) have a weak
stomach, you can observe the process of
mummification using fruit. This activity
shows how drying and spices prevent
decay.
Chicken Mummies
This tells, in detail, how to mummify a
chicken. They say theirs has been around
for over a year now.
Plant Tricks
Shows how plants can grow from
pieces--stem, leaf, etc.--of plants.
This activity also explains what a clone
is, information that may become
increasingly important..
Kitchen Chemistry
Uses the widest range of acid/base
indicators that I've ever seen. Red
cabbage is especially vivid.
Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream
A very impressive experiment using
liquid nitrogen to make something very
popular--ice cream.
Earthquakes, Plate
Tectonics, Volcanoes and Geological Time
Phone books, paper towels and dinner
plates are used to represent the forces
that cause earthquakes and mountain
ranges. It makes processes that occur on
a huge scale, and that seem highly
abstract, easily understandable.

Making Polymers
A well-designed program to make
polymers, and explain how we use them
Ooey, Gooey Recipes for
the Classroom
Monster bubbles, play slime (goop), Gak
The Ant's Picnic
Foraging for food from an ant's
perspective. Kids do benign experiments
and keep records to see what attracts
the notice of the ants, and what they
like.
Sundials
Make a sundial and test it out on
successive days. This site has a good
explanation of how sundials work. This
might be good to combine with an art
lesson.
Shadows and the Earth
Shows how the inclination of the earth's
axis makes for summer and winter.
Shadows and the Earth and
Moon
Demonstrates how the phases of the moon
occur
Laser Activities
Make an artificial fog, and examine the
laser beam through it. Also games to
play with your cat or dog--my cat
thought this was the best game ever.
Dry Ice Experiments
Sounds fun and a little wild. Do make
sure everyone has eye protection, and
that no one handles the dry ice with
bare hands.
Flapping Wings
An ornithopter is an aircraft that has
flapping wings, like a bird, instead of
a propeller. This site has plans to make
your own ornithopter, and a lot of
information and pictures, some moving.
Glide Path
Download a game in which you 'land' an
aircraft, referring to controls to help
you. Happy landings.
Phoenix Sky Harbor
Airport Kids' Section
Make paper airplanes and do experiments
on the principles of aerodynamics.
The principles of aeronautics and some
experiments to demonstrate them.

Lady Washington
Learn how to find positions on a map,
from the crew of the Lady Washington, a
traditional square-rigger sailing ship.
Hawaiian Navigation
The Polynesians sailed in the vast
Pacific Ocean between islands that seem
mere dots in comparison. This site
discusses how they did it, and has an
on-line quiz at the end.
Escape from Knab
Highly clever salary and budget
simulation that contains enough
real-world information to make it truly
useful. Playing this game may help your
kids understand "We can't afford it"
even though, to a kid, you obviously
have "lots of money" in your wallet--and
insurance, utility bills, interest,
taxes, etc. The game deals with salary
and expenses, including the
less-tangible ones, as well as credit
cards, interest (in and out), living
expenses and writing out checks.
Cash Register
Easy but clever simulation of the change
you should get back from purchases of
various sizes. It has pictures of real
coins, but could use a little "story" or
game to make it more fun. US money, of
course.
